The School

The Cranbrook School is an Anglican independent non-selective day and boarding school for boys, P–Year 12. It is located in Bellevue Hill in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. The Cranbrook School encourages boys to think and act skilfully, creatively and responsibly. It seeks to provide motivation and challenge for those with academic or creative gifts, and comprehensive support for boys with learning needs. The Red Room Company’s Artistic Director Johanna Featherstone has previously worked with The Cranbrook School as a poet in residence.

The Project

Year Ten boys within the English Department’s extension program explored activities from the Toilet Doors learning resource. The group of ten boys composed guerilla poetry and explored how this genre can challenge an audience’s expectations of the media and publication format of poetry. They were given a space within the school grounds in which to share the poetry and images they produced for their school community. Poet Toby Fitch edited and compiled an anthology of poems produced by the boys, entitled 'attempted defiance'. Click here to view their anthology.
