NBCS is a vibrant, independent, co-educational school in Terrey Hills (Sydney), offering a dynamic, student-centred education from Kindergarten to Year 12. Our approach is a dual focus on learning and opportunity. We have been very intentional in fostering a culture of self-directed, student-led learning – growing students to be high-capacity leaders and creative thinkers. Strong, positive relationships are the cornerstone to learning at NBCS, with authentic community and true collaboration being the foundation on which learning is built.
In a special workshop series at the Art Gallery of NSW, students immerse themselves in the transparent fabrics and fragrant spices of Ernesto Neto’s visceral installation just like drops in time, nothing, on display in the Spacemakers and Roomshakers exhibition. They then create poetry about Ernesto’s artwork and their own treasured special objects!
Workshops are guided by gallery staff alongside Perth-based innovative poet and performer Scott-Patrick Mitchell. After the workshops, students enter their poems to Red Room Poetry’s free competition, Poetry Object. All submissions are published in Red Room Poetry’s digital library.
Scott-Patrick Mitchell (SPM) is a non-binary West Australian poet, writer and spoken word artist. SPM’s work has been described by George Anderson at Bold Monkey as being “one of the most diverse and original poets working in Western Australia today” while John Kinsella has described their work as being “new ahead of the new”.
SPM’s work appears in Contemporary Australian Poetry, The Fremantle Press Anthology of Western Australian Poetry, Solid Air, Stories of Perth and Going Postal. In 2019, SPM won Coal Creek’s Literary Award for Poetry, The Creative Connections Poetry Prize, Melbourne Poets Union’s Martin Downey Urban Realist Poetry Award and The Wollongong Short Story Prize.
A mentor to many emerging West Australian poets and recipient of a 2019 KSP Writers Centre First Draft Fellowship, SPM is the coordinator for WA Poets Inc’s Emerging Poets Program. They are also an event producer for WAPI’s annual Perth Poetry Festival.
