The School

Bomaderry High is a modern country comprehensive high school on the south coast of NSW near Nowra, whose students span across Bomaderry, Berry, Shoalhaven Heads, Cambewarra and Kangaroo Valley areas.

Nowra High School is part of the Shoalhaven District on the South Coast of New South Wales. The school has a long history of academic, cultural and sporting achievements.

Shoalhaven High School is a comprehensive high school providing a quality education in a caring and supportive environment. The school's motto "Aiming Higher" epitomises the opportunities given to all students to reach their full potential.

YWCA NSW supports vulnerable people across NSW at times in their lives when they need it most, regardless of their age, religion or gender. They help individuals, families and whole communities develop behaviours and skills to become strong and self-reliant.

The Project

As part of a special collaboration with Bundanon Trust, Red Room Poetry Education poet Tim Sinclair spent from October 14th-28th in residence working with students from Shoalhaven, Bombaderry, Nowra High Schools and the YWCA. Students explored different sites at Bundanon, composing and publishing poems that responded to themes of The Disappearing. These included the creation of ephemeral poems on leaves and in river sand, and theme poems published on The Disappearing app.

Tim Sinclair composed a poem for the schools, titled ‘Health Department FactSheet No.67(a)’, available on the app, and the Red Room website (or view above in playlist). He has worked a number of projects with Red Room before and his educational prowess is clearly exhibited as he brings out the poetic abilities of these young students. With impressive restraint these students produced work that displays a remarkable talent at wielding metaphor, lyricism and, at times, humour.

The Poet

Tim Sinclair

Tim Sinclair is a poet and novelist. His books include Nine Hours North (a coming-of-age novel set in Japan), and Re:reading the dictionary (poetry for word nerds). His latest verse novel, Run (a 2014 CBCA Notable Book) is a YA parkour thriller set in Sydney, and uses elements of concrete poetry to capture the speed and energy of the discipline. He is currently working on a young adult post-apocalyptic trilogy. Deeply influenced by place, Tim draws on his history of living and working in different parts of the world (Malaysia, Scotland, Japan, USA, Australia) to explore the tension between the lived experience of the universal and the particular.
