Announcing the 2024 Poetry Month Program
Poetic voices from around the nation, shared with the world
From emerging and established poets to beloved Australian public figures with an unexpected passion for poetry, the 2024 Poetry Month program is a celebration of the many ways poetry touches our lives.
Featuring daily commissioned poems and writing prompts from artists as varied as Nam Le, Felicity Plunkett, Kirli Saunders, AWGIE-winning Dylan Van Den Berg, and Australian Poetry Slam Champion Rob Waters, as well as Poetry Ambassadors Heather Mitchell, Stan Grant and Chika Ikogwe sharing poems for the first time.
Seven Poetry Month Ambassadors will amplify Poetry Month through call-outs, writing prompts as well as sharing their own poems. The 2024 ambassadors are:
- Journalist, TV and radio presenter, and author Stan Grant
- Actor Heather Mitchell currently starring in RBG: Of Many, One
- Author and poet Nam Le
- Mitch McTaggart, AWGIE-winning writer, producer and host of The Last Year Of Television
- Actor and writer Chika Ikogwe
- Lang Leav, poet and author
- James Colley, TV comedy writer, producer and author
In the lead up to the National Poetry Month Gala on Thursday 29 August, State Showcases will be held around Australia across August, celebrating some of the very best poets and writing today, including Ellen van Neerven, Jo Case, Ouyang Yu and Grace Yee.

- Darwin, Northern Territory on Friday 23 August
And to amp up the celebrations this year, we're also bringing the UK’s biggest poetry and performance festival, Contains Strong Language, to Sydney from August 28-31 to close out Poetry Month 2024.
