Be a Friend to Yourself

This is a transcript of the visual poem 'Be a Friend to Yourself', by Poetry Ambassador Courtney Peppernell, commissioned as part of Poetry Month.
If I could sit down with my heart, I would say for all
the things that broke and undid her, there are many
more things that can stitch her back together again.
I would remind her that courage comes in waves, and
while not every year is the same, day by day, week by week,
we deserve to be loved in every beat.
If I could sit down with my mind I would say for all the
reasons she thought it was not possible to go on, and
the times she had lost her way, there are many more
reasons to stay —like a night sky filled with stars,
warm coffee in the morning, the joy of an endless
summer—that even if sometimes we are filled with
darkness, tomorrow the sun will rise, and so too,
the world in colour.
If I could sit down with my soul I would say, for all the
moments she did not feel worthy, we are not defined by
the scars we wear, or the mistakes we’ve made.
That strength lies in our ability to continue forward,
no matter the distance or the times we are afraid.
So I hope, one day, you get the chance to sit down with
your heart and mind and soul, and remind them that
even though life can change, and twist and bend, the
greatest gift you can give to yourself, is to be your own friend.
