Hodan Yasin, a 24-year-old Somali refugee, sought asylum in Australia to escape persecution by Al-Shabaab—a designated terrorist organization in Somalia. Upon arriving as an unaccompanied minor at 16 in 2013, she spent a month on Christmas Island before being forcibly transferred to Nauru. Following setting herself on fire on Nauru, she was evacuated to Brisbane in 2015 for medical treatment.
