Joanna Yang
Born and raised in Naarm/Melbourne and now based in Tennant Creek (Warumungu Country), I am a teacher, podcaster, writer, and now, poet. While watching various artists on Youtube had sparked my interest in spoken word growing up, it wasn’t until 2022 when I finally tried it for myself, attending a poetry workshop out of curiosity. I have since won the 2022 Australian Poetry Slam and performed across Australia, and will make appearances in international festivals later this year. My poetry is influenced heavily by my Chinese identity and pride, as well as my role as a high school educator. With often tough topics to flesh out, I value the art of storytelling through humour and compassion.
