Noel Causer
Noel was around in the seventies when the event in his poem took place, and he wrote this response in 2007. Noel was employed with the Department of Motor Transport (DMT) as a Roads Inspector. It was their job then to check on all movements of heavy vehicles using NSW roads, which meant roadside inspections of both loads, logbooks, etc. Truck drivers were required to lodge monthly returns to the DMT, and if their recorded of mileage didn't match that held by the DMT then it was Noel’s job to chase that outstanding debt. The truckies’ response to this massive collection was to rebel, and so the road blockage came about. If he was an artist at the time, Noel would have drawn the truckie heading down the highway, followed by the DMT inspectors, the DMR inspectors, the finance company, tyre company, the Police, the fuel company, the girlfriend and, last, the wife and kids. Who would want to be a truck driver?!
