The simple gift from a guest
A bunch of stalks with buds
Of promise peeping through
In shy slips of colour
One vivid tangerine splash
Unfurling as guarantee
Of pleasure to come
Each day a new delight
Thrills waking eyes
Composed in bright disorder
With such artless innocence
And flagrant joy
Poppies make me happy
As no other flower can
