A little girl and her mum walk into a stall
But the girl see’s nothing she likes at all
There are small plastic horses
and big feathery birds
But the girl still hears her father’s words
“Use this money carefully because it’s all you will get, buy something with it you will never forget”
He was so far away and she still didn’t know
What she would do with this money of which she couldn’t let go

But when she turned her head to the highest shelf
She really couldn’t believe herself
There it was, soft and grey
To her it was the best thing she’d seen all day
With a huge black nose and big fluffy ears
She knew that at night it would scare away all of her fears
A koala with a baby tucked in it’s arms
For her it just set off all the alarms
The koala was carried all over the zoo
It was the girl’s new best friend and everyone knew that was true

Once the little girl got home she played with her friend
Till she had to go to bed but that wasn’t the end
Because that night when the girl fell asleep with that bear
The things she was usually scared of were no longer there
And in the morning the little girl woke with a smile
She knew she would have this bear for quite a while
Her father’s money had been well spent
And back to her father that little girl went
Once at the airport she showed him her friend
She knew her bear was money she’d never wish she didn’t spend

And now that six-year-old is nearly thirteen
Not a teenager, not a child, but just inbetween
And her koala still sits in a special place in her room
Still soft and grey but no longer smelling of perfume
It’s baby is still with it, it’s nose is still black
It’s something the girl would never give back
The koala is there for the girl whenever
And she knows she will keep that koala forever
