The necklace

I can feel the cold, silver chain on my neck, and I know it’s mine.
Usually your birthday is the most special day of the year for seven-year-old girls
But Dad made it more special than anything once I opened my gift.
I place my hand over the pendant
And feel the roughness of the shining stones
That sits in the pointy frame.
It’s the shape of a dragonfly, as unique as your thumb print.
And each day I wear the necklace.
I know my father may not be by my side
But the memories surely are and I know he’s thinking of me.
