The Necklace

It’s a child’s doing.
It’s colourful, messy and out of place.
It makes me wish for the salty air of the beach
The necklace is something of imagination
The rainbow beads have different personalities
Butter yellow, cantaloupe orange, strawberry red,
Light forest green and light ocean blue.
They feel smooth but some are rough on the edges.
The necklace has stayed the same over the years
But the wire is getting a bit rusty and old.
It’s like my mother, a bit wacky, colourful,
Bit rough around the edges, not perfect and a bit rusty.
This necklace was born in Mooloolaba with my cousins
It reminds of the fun, humid summer
Even when it’s rainy and gloomy outside.
It brings happiness everywhere it goes.
The necklace is something done by a child
The necklace is made of pride and happiness
The sound of the beads bumping each other on a rusty
Wire makes me smile.
