Reciprocity beats at the heart of Fair Trade, a unique project hosted by Red Room Poetry which offers Indigenous poets from so-called Australia and around the world to connect and poetically collaborate. We speak with two of Fair Trade's collaborators, Sam Wagan Watson and Sámi writer Sigbjørn Skåden, about their process, their work and the enduring benefits of engaging with each other's poetry digitally, as sovereign Indigenous peoples.

Sam Wagan Watson

Samuel Watson is an (Ab)original ghost writer. His late father, Sam Watson was a black panther who wrote the award-winning novel The Kadaitcha Sung, (Penguin Publishing). Samuel lives and writes in his hometown of Brisbane, descending from Munanjali and Germanic heritage. He has authored over a dozen collections of poetry, primarily inspired by the oral traditions of spiritual lore passed down from his elders.

Sigbjørn Skåden

Sigbjørn Skåden (b. 1976) comes from the Sámi village of Láŋtdievvá (Planterhaug) in Troms County, Northern Norway. He writes in both indigenous Sámi language and in Norwegian and made his debut in 2004 with the poetry collection Skuovvadeddjiid gonagas («The King Of Shoemakers»).
Poet

Annie (Te Rarawa) has worked extensively as a cultural producer, writer, editor and weaver. Her work has appeared in numerous Australian and New Zealand journals, magazines and community projects including Te Whē, Tupuranga Journal, Contemporary Hum, Sport, Cordite Poetry Review, Rabbit, Australian Poetry, SBS, Running Dog, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Kaldor Arts Projects, un Projects and the Unyoked Anthology.
