POEM FOREST Soil-turning ceremony

Poem Forest-Image-Red Room Poetry-soil turning

Dates:
from 20 Apr 2021 - 10 a.m.
Address:
The Australian Botanic Garden, Mt Annan, NSW

In April 2021, we ushered the first seedlings into the soil at Mount Annan in the Australian Botanic Garden, Mt Annan as part of the POEM FOREST Nature Prize 2021.

We were honoured with a smoking and soil turning ceremony by Uncle Ivan Wellington. There was a sharing of stories, spirits and poems by Dakota Feirer and Aunty Verna Baker.

Children and adults alike placed their hands in the soil, pressing native saplings into the earth. Each of us held a sense of responsibility and connection. We left strengthened.

POEM FOREST aims to plant 22,000 trees native to the Cumberland Plains Woodland to help heal ecosystems and habitats. Children, students and teachers are invited to enter their poems with the chance to win $5000 in prizes.
