We're partnering with the Powerhouse Museums Discovery Centre in Castle Hill for an eco-poetry workshop and slam for young people aged 8-12, hosted by award-winning poet Isabella Luna. The workshop will take place from 10:30 - 12, and the slam from 1 - 2 pm.

About the workshop

In the morning workshop, participants will learn techniques they can use to grow stories from small seedlings into polished poems. Participants will have the opportunity to submit their poem to the POEM FOREST Prize. All poems will prompt the planting of a native tree in the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, be published on the Red Room Poetry website and go in the running for over $5,000 worth of prizes.

At 1 pm, everyone will be invited to gather beneath the trees on the lawn for the POEM FOREST Eco-Slam. Participants will be invited to take the mic and share the seeds of their stories with the sky. The audience will choose their favourite poem to win a prize! Family members are encouraged to join our audience.

Parental supervision is not required for this program. Parents and guardians are welcome to explore the Museums Discovery Centre while the workshop is being held.

About the POEM FOREST Prize

Created by Red Room Poetry, in partnership with The Australian Botanic Garden, POEM FOREST invites students and teachers to use their words to make positive climate action. For every nature poem received a tree is planted to help heal habitats and create a POEM FOREST for future generations. In 2021, over 5,000 poem trees were planted.

All POEM FOREST Prize entries are published in our digital library and have the chance to win $5,000 in prizes, including $500 cash for each category, book packs from Magabala Books, Pantera Press, Wonderground as well as Garden tours, plants, seeds and more.
