In 2024, as part of Red Room Poetry’s Poetry Month program, Writing in Resistance foregrounds the poetry performance of women and girls who have been incarcerated as minors in Australia's deterrence-based offshore detention. They have faced continual gender apartheid, legal limbo, and been denied access to education and social engagement.

Join us for an enlightening discussion hosted by Senator Dr Mehreen Faruqi at 1pm- 2:15 pm on 13 August at Parliament House Canberra. The event will feature three poets — 24 year-old Hodan Yasin, 18 year-old Aida Darabi and 14 year-old Seti Gholshani — as well as legal experts legal experts Professor Kate Ogg Associate Dean at the College of Law, Sanmati Verma, Acting Legal Director of Human Rights Law Centre and The Australian National University and Associate Professor Anthea Vogl, University of Technology Sydney with moderation by the CEO of UN Women Australia Simone Clarke.

Founded and directed by Dr Saba Vasefi, Writing In Resistance supports women and non-binary, passionate about utilizing poetic expression to counter gender-based violence, racism and systemic discrimination.
