The Original Object
Our Poetry Object project has received scores of submissions over the last month and far more are expected in the coming weeks. While enjoying the work of our young poets we’re often surprised by highly original themes that are set in frames that truly utilise the medium of poetry.
Take for example Lola of Mr Shepard’s Year 5 class at Paddington Public School whose poem ‘Our planet’ discusses the most original and universal object: Earth. The poem works to outline the importance of our planet to us and the insignificance of our planet (and by extent humanity itself) in the wider universe. The most unique part of this poem is the closing stanza:
E
Ea
Ear
Eart
Earth
Our Planet
In a line-by line analysis the growth of the word Earth can be seen as an environmentalist metaphor for the growth of the human race and the slow spelling out of the word indicates it is something we’ve forgotten to spell or forgotten about completely. This is a young poet to watch.
