You have been away
for many weeks,
but I am only gradually
losing my mind.

It started about ten days ago,
when I heard a crack,
like the pressure was too great
and a tree in the uninhabited part of the backwoods
had finally snapped.

There have been no more sharp sounds since then,
just the faintly resolute roar of the whole forest,
fiercely grasping at the earth,
as if it is about to peel,
like a scalp, off the edge of the cliff.
