Born to Fight

Blak curly hair
Brown skin
Brown eyes
Broad shoulders
Built to fight
Walk a healing journey, now a blak sheep
Uni degree, uppity blak
Loves poetry, sensitive blak
Culture strong, savage blak
Trauma filled, negative blak
Wanna meet a lubly man, get married – now she really a delulu blak
Walk the mountains, hear the old ones sing
Tell yarns of the past, no choice but to hold the weight
Grief is a tidal wave, building the more I ignore it
Heart bruised, tender, silent cries
No one hears, alone, deprived
But on the outside I’m sure I look just fine
Cause this blak girl
was built tough
Black curly hair
Brown eyes
Brown skin
Broad shoulders
Built to fight
Keep your Ancestors fire burning.

#30in30 writing prompt
Poetry means freedom. It’s allowed me to find my voice, reclaim my story and assert sovereignty on my mind, body and soul.
