And we're back!
Unlocked returned to The Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional Centre in April 2015 after the success of the first visit in 2013. During this series of workshops, the rapper and spoken-word poet, Nick Bryant Smith (a.k.a SOLO and one half of Horrorshow) along with our Artistic Director Johanna Featherstone run new series of workshops on Monday 13th, Wednesday 15th and Monday 20th of April with the focus being poetry and songwriting. The students created inspiring and heartfelt poems and also composed a group poem that was recorded as a rap song - click here to listen to the students perform their rap song!
At the end of the previous program, Tim Wilson, the Chaplain of The Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional Centre, said "the poetry produced by inmates in our centre captured the unspoken stories of their lives, of their hopes and dreams that have never been realised or shared, of death, lost love and the dark days of incarceration. Their words revealed their humanity and gave me a window through which I could understand and engage them at a much deeper level. Seeing the world through their poems has opened the door to a much richer and more meaningful dialogue with each of them allowing for positive changes-a reframing of self- to take place in their lives.”
Keeping this idea at the core of Unlocked, the opportunity to open more doors to "much richer and more meaningful dialogues" with the students, to "reveal their humanity" and voice "the unspoken stories of their lives, of their hopes and dreams", we are proud to present our newest Unlocked anthology.
