A Desperate Plea

In dwindling numbers, they roam the barren lands,
Searching for aid that never comes.
Hunger is not their only foe,
As they must also seek a new home to know.
Their cries of despair echo through the air,
But no one seems to hear or care.
Their miniscule bodies tremble and quiver,
As predators just keep coming quicker.
They hide away through the dark night,
In a hollow log, both safe and tight.
But there, they shed their tears of silver,
As they face their fears and shiver.
The numbat meanders, lost and alone,
Hoping to find trees to call their own.
Their pleas for help go unanswered still,
As they yearn for the joy they once did feel.
