Day turns to night in a matter of minutes,

The coal-black, choking smoke inhibits

The vision and breath of so many souls,

Taken away by the fire, rushing to reach its goal.

The heat of summer is like never before,

The creatures of the bush can only listen to the fire roar.

The starving inferno rages across the land,

Animals run, in dire need of a helping hand…

Mother possum silhouetted against a darkened moon,

Dyed blood-red by the relentless doom.

Her joeys call out from thirsty, dry mouths

Begging for food as the wind blows south.

But nobody around can hear them cry,

As an overwhelmed eagle plummets from the sky…

We disregard the information

Passed down from the generations

Of the first humans that arrived here,

Is the end of their ways near?

Nature inherits human mistakes which only opens the gates,

To extinction.
