Brown furred creature,
Stalking prey,
Slowly,
Carefully,
Creeps closer,
Eyes on the silver scales.

Tall, skinny trees
Hovering over the river,
Like hawks
Watching their prey.

In the hot burning sun,
Shiny silver scales glide upstream.
Unaware that one of their own
Will fill the clench of hunger.

Sleuths of hungry brown monsters
Storm the stream.

The cub,
Far behind,
Trying to keep up,
No match for the 10 foot grizzlies,
Finds a strong, solid rock,
Stumbles on top.

Exhausted,
Having swum for days,
The salmon battle against the stream
which crashes around them.

The cub is a mountain in their way;
Massive,
Strong,
Unmoving,
Impenetrable.

His sleuth watch on;
Proud,
Nervous,
Amazed.

The rock under the mountain
Is crumbling like
An earth quake
About to give in.

The school reach the rapids.
Tired,
Exhausted,
Using all their strength,
They leap into the pounding white water.

The cub stalks one silver scaled
Cold blooded creature,
Battling to swim
Even a metre.

Finally, they push
to reach the crossing,
Where the cub is waiting,
Ready to pounce.

It’s time.
The salmon jumps
And fails to reach over the crossing.
Others around it
Jump
And make it.
It tries again.
Flying through the air
Like a bird,
Until…
CRUNCH!

The cub roars!
His sleuth run in
Like crazy.

All the four legged creatures
Get a feed that day.
What they’ve been thinking about
All day.
