Dancing Memories

I wake up from a dream
A storm has passed
Sunbeams brighten my room
Dew drops climb across my window
A memory from a time before
A world of whistling and nails, hammers and fabric
I see my grandparents serving a customer
Then a kookaburra’s call makes me look up
The beautiful bird reminds me of my Nonna
She’d always tell me if there was one.
I go back to the memory
Sweat dripping down my Pa’s red cheeks
Proud to be a part of a hard working family
I was young, but I still remember
They never failed makin’ the shoes
The journey was hard but they never gave up
The clickety clack of my mother's shoes on the tiles
Makes me look up...
And you wouldn't have thought but there they are
My grandparents’ shoe lasts.
