When I play it
I am an old man
The songs return to me
Lessons from Dad
Paint a picture in my head
Pictures are painted in dots on my didg.
Pictures of my flag and my people
Make me feel peace.

This poem was highly commended for Poetry Object 2019
'I was drawn to this poem straight away; the first two lines say so much. The talismanic weight of this object instantly comes through; it’s not just an instrument but a way to connect with ancestors. A way to hear stories, its magic is immediate. This is work that shines.'
~ Emilie Zoey Baker, Judge, Poetry Object 2019
