I remember the trees.

Rough bark beneath my fingers, and leaves in my hair.

Racing through the forests without a single care.

Great, green pillars reaching for the sun.

A friend and a shelter, every single one.

Now they are gone, but still, I remember.

I remember the sea.

Waves lapping at my ankles, and sand in my nails.

Soaring across the ocean, the wind in my sails.

Wading through the rock pools, collecting pretty shells.

Searching for fossils, and the stories that they’d tell.

Now they are gone, but still, I remember.

I remember life.

People hustling and bustling all throughout the world.

Animals and humans, every single boy and girl.

We believed we were perfect, that we could touch the sky.

But still, despite it all, we left our world to die.

Try as I might,

I cannot see the light.

I take one final breath, and I remember.
