Jewels

Assimilating so effortlessly within the foaming ends of each wave
The various sizes integrated in each cycle
Tumbling, turning and tracing
Crushing water possessing hundreds of pieces
From afar they seemed like jewels of the sea
Glistening in the sun
Magnetic magenta, sparkling silver
Multicoloured accessories clinging to the swaying body of water
Although they draped over the neck of the tenacious turtle
They weren’t accessories at all…
Squeezing as tight as a baby’s grip around their mother’s thumb
Their hopeful eyes were betrayed by the faults of species across the sand
Slowly yet surely the life drained out of their shells
Soulless shells
But as the waves raked their way across the sand and back into the ocean
The body of the suffocated turtle remained
A symbol of the remnants we allow to remain
