Letters for Me

A messy stack of papers and envelopes written on with coloured inks
Of grey, silver, black and gold, and all the colours of the rainbow;
Letters that make you smile and letters that make you think,
They crimple and crumple as I unfold them
Memories and secrets spilling out;
There are good luck letters and get well letters,
Thank you letters and I'm sorry letters,
Letters of concern, asking what's wrong,
And even complaints about why I haven't written in so long!
Her words have taught me to be aware of whatever I do or say,
As someone's bound to react, either in a good or bad way;
Take the time to talk to friends, and always try to reply,
I didn't, so I've missed my chance at that in life;
It's no good being all fancy on the outside when
It's the inside details that really make it all worthwhile;
Sometimes the most exciting, wonderful or dramatic news
Are best explained in the plain graveness of grey;
They are more than just words put together on a page;
For even something as simple as a letter,
It brings back old memories from those long ago days.
