The Diver

Something calls me, I open my eyes
Water ripples around me, cold as ice
The chill doesn’t scare me, nor lack of air
I was made to survive almost anywhere
I twist and I kick, and I dive down below,
My flippers churn the sand into a golden rainbow
I turn lazily, seeing endless blue,
I spot a stone tunnel – I propel myself through
The floor falls away, the abyss black as night,
Kelp dead and dying, my headlights ignite,
As I glide to the centre of the enormous cavern
A temple stands, ruined, gold paint in patterns
But the calling is gone, the world starts to fade,
I close my eyes, the game has been played
I’ll find more tomorrow, continue my quest
My eyes close, I sink as I’m forced to rest
