The Truth Comes Out

the shells are small with a hint of pearl
they are very rare and extremely hard to find
my grandmother made this strand
and she handed it down to me
these particular shells remind me of an island
like when you just walk out of an airport
and you are in hawaii and they give you
a lovely necklace
it is extremely delicate
i only wear it on occasions
like when i go out for dinner or to a party
when my grandmother handed this to me
she told me that she made it
that she came across some shells in her mind
she wanted to make an heirloom
she drilled holes in the shells
and threaded them on string
and she kept it until i was five
then she surprised me
i closed my eyes and she placed it
around my collarbone
then i opened my eyes
and looked in the mirror
