those smooth rainy days of winter that wind on,
clock stuck at ten am all day long,
until night falls abruptly and you're left alone with your thoughts.
reflections on wet roads as you walk home in darkness,
the swish of tyres mimicking the waves.
beachside days have a sameness that blurs the boundaries of the week,
swells time and mingles minutes in with hours.
the sharp tang of the ocean lifts sadness by its bootstraps
as i meander along clifftops
with my mind's eye pasting up summer snapshots
over the grey.
