One day, I grow short
Replaced by a pen
To teach us we are useless
That your mistakes cannot be erased
~ from ‘A Piece of Wood’ by Taiyeon, Year 5, Greenacre Public School, First place (Primary), Poetry Object 2019
Sparking creativity through poems about treasured, curious, everyday, extraordinary, interplanetary, or talismanic objects.
Red Room Poetry Object was Australasia’s largest free poetry-writing competition for young people (Years 3-10) and their teachers, with over $10,000 in prizes to be won.
In 2019, Poetry Object reached 240 schools and 414 classrooms across Australia and New Zealand. Students and teachers discovered new ways to write poems about objects they hold dear, and submitted over 2350 poems.
In this year, our commissioned poets were Stuart Barnes, Claire G Coleman, Arielle Cottingham, Pola Fanous, Eleanor Jackson, Benjamin Laird, Jacqui Malins and Zech Soakai. This year's judge was award-winning poet Emilie Zoey Baker.
