Smiling Quokka, the happiest animal in the world,

Smallest of the world wide wallaby species,

Vulnerable mammals fighting the silent war of extinction.

Thick, coarse, grey-brown fur grows as their armour,

Short rounded fluffy ears perk up at the the howl of the dingo,

Their long tail carves tracks on Whadjuk Nyoongar soil,

Shorter hind legs help them escape from feral villains.

Herbivorous creatures, they find food easily before war unfolds,

Not just eating, but also sleeping in protective spiked plants,

Under the shadow of nightfall, they browse for new young growth,

Eating helps prepare them for the battle of their life: Extinction.

Once abundant on the Australian mainland,

Bounding around happily,

Then in the early 1800s,

They started disappearing.

Because their arch nemesis came,

DINGOS,

In the late 1800s, foxes also left their mark.
