They lunged towards the sky,
with aching limbs of broken bark
Roots digging into the ground
Like the heels of a child, stuck in their ways
(I will not be moved)

Smooth white bark cracked in the centre
Broken, fading from the inside out
Splintered sides, shattered capsule bodies

Saviour shelter for some
A place to call home
Sleeping in the hollows
Sunlight sparkling, glinting gums
Eucalypts in the early air
Sweet smells drifting in the dawn

Blossoms broken at the base of the bush
Oils     drip    drip    drip;
and fall amongst the leaves
Like the tears of a grieving child
