In the Gum Tree

Beneath the leaves of the gum tree,

A koala looking up to see a sky painted a blood red fog. 

Heat encompassing as a thick blanket around the marsupial.

Flames stringing at its scuffed fur. 

Fire rising, pulling at the trees in its path

Leaving a trail of ash and decease. 

Taking, taking, taking. 

Beneath the charred branches of a once mighty gum tree,

A koala lays looking at a sky painted blood red.

Then black. Black. Black.
