I sift through the leaves and almost faint at the sight of one unearthed

looking like a burnt marshmallow

Tiny, elusive, skilled at killing prey

Thought to be extinct

Hairy, freaky, camouflages well

Extremely endangered

Scuttling through leaf litter

trying to hide

Fire and heat is near

Whoosh! It is engulfed

Burnt bush

Kangaroo Island singed

Assassin spiders thought to be extinct

but a few survived

Then two are found

a new hope dawns

Scary, yes, they are

But the Kangaroo Island Assassin spider species lives on
