Mother of Pearl

My thumb rubs against its lumpy shell
In the sun it shimmers like gold
It’s solid like a rock
If I lose it I'll crawl in a ball
and cry
When I'm lonely and scared
I feel safe and not alone
when I wear it
The tummy is as smooth
as laminated paper
The leather string around my neck
makes me smile
Memories rushing through my mind
bring laughter and fun
