I am the old gum tree
I have seen wonders great and small
All stuck with me as memories
Here are a few that I recall
I watch as peers are all cut down
For structures to house a home
Many people share moments with me
And secrets in hushed tones
I shield many from the morning sun
And the cool when night chooses to come
My leaves are tickled by children
And parents having fun
My trunk is decorated
With lights, streamers and blood
With birds nests and wet fat tears
These are precious memories
I have remembered all my years
But there are some I try hard to forget
Of flames that seer my barky skin
And animals, in a rush to save their kin.
