On the Penalty Spot

He shoved me hard and down I fell;
the foul was called with a yell.
I stepped up, proud to take the shot
ten yards out on the penalty spot.

Time to test out my new boots
Adidas F50s electric blue
I take a deep breath standing back, before
the ref blows the whistle and I have a crack.

As my foot made contact with the ball
it travelled high and past them all
over the keeper and into the net,
a moment that I’ll never forget.

The sound of cheering I couldn’t block
with five more minutes on the clock.
The excitement overruns the heat
we’re one nil up on the sheet.

I never thought I’d get so much delight
From a bit of blue and a bit of white,
And my very own five minutes of fame
But that’s all part of the beautiful game.
