Its fur dappled in stripes like shadows under trees
His tail long and elegant swishing in the soft grass
Cool crisp air blows lazily along like its just woken up
‘Scuttle, scuttle’
‘Tip toe, tip toe’
A mouse is hiding in the long green grass
The tabby cat slipped in to the shadows pursuing the house mouse
The breeze that was there a second ago now turned in to swirling wind
The cat’s eyes dilate while his body drops low
The mouse, unknowing, going on collecting food slowly
The predator steps carefully, not wanting to make a single noise
‘Snap’
The mouse’s ears prick to the sound, it senses danger
Here’s the cat’s last chance before it’s too late
He pounces, catching his prey and taking it off to devour
My tabby cat is still learning to hunt: sometimes winning and sometimes losing
Choosing him from litters of kittens but only one stood out for me
Playing in the corner with a toy mouse, its eyes wild with excitement
Bending down beside him he leaps into my lap looking for a loving home
This one: I knew he would be the perfect tabby kitten for me
