The Aurora

It was autumn
The trees were losing their leaves
Like a magician conjuring coins away and never giving them back.
I was woken in the freezing night to go outside.
There in the sky was an aurora
It shimmered like light moving across hot coals in a fire.
Even with three coats on,
I still felt icy cold.
The green flickered,
Like clouds changing shape on a windy day,
While the red was a motionless translucent tinge.
Above me there was a bright shape
Almost like an enormous white firework.
I was tired and cold,
But I forced myself to stay outside
Because it was so enchanting.
