As soft as my mother’s voice
A safe haven from all the monsters
As white as my grandmother’s pearl earrings
And as clean as a piece of paper waiting to be written on

As old as my beating heart
It wraps around me tightly like a burrito
As warm as my aunt’s homemade brownies
And as big as the Statue of Liberty

Now it’s tattered as if someone slashed a knife through it
Nothing to protect me from the monsters that roam
As black as the blackbird that flies around at dusk
And so dirty you can’t tell the original colour

Bullied for sleeping with it
Told to grow up
So thin that I’m freezing
Now it’s as small as a single grain of rice

Now it’s gone just like that
Thrown away carelessly as if it were yesterday’s lunch
Watched as the garbage truck collects it
Watched as the memories disappeared around the corner
