The Mockingjay

The bronze bird carrying an arrow of strength in its mouth
Resting in a bronze circle of protection
Whip! Whip! The Mockingjay whips its strong wings through the air
The size of an eye, looking into the haunt and terror of the Hunger Games
Detailed, carefully shaped, scarred by its meaning but still carrying details of pride
It's as free as the wind, as passionate and courageous as Katniss Everdeen herself
It tastes like bravery and strength, I bite it and instantly feel that I can do anything
“My strength I give you at all times,” it’s caw merely a whisper
A bird with wings that gives you the courage to fly with it
I feel absolute strength when I put it on
The Mockingjay is my spirit, powerful and strong like a raging fire
I instantly knew it was for me when I laid my eyes on it
The symbol of strength, courage, passion, rebellion, protection, Katniss
“Do you watch over me or is it myself working up my own courage?,” I wonder looking at it
I raise my left hand, apply my first three fingers, place them to my lips, hold them above my head
It contains strength of the Gods and passes its strength down to me
When comes the day that I’m old enough,
I will get it engraved in my skin with black ink and it will stick with me forever
It is a source of uncontainable power
There are so many replicas but this one feels special and inspiring
It’s home is in a jewelled box along with four other mockingjays
The box is a heart, representing my own
The home is a box but it belongs around my neck, on my jacket and on my skin
The secret I share with it, one that no one else knows
It empowers me, sets me free
The bird of courage
The bird of power
The bird of strength
The bird of protection
The bird of rebellion
The bird of Katniss
The Mockingjay
