The Origin of Species

The stone gleamed with splendor
Surviving fire, water and pressure.
Once a magnificent example of natural selection,
It shows that none can live forever.
Melted by a volcano, burning, suffering,
Scorched into winter, dark and cold.
Spiralling down deep under the soil
Never crumbling, never growing old.
From sea to desert, the creature sailed
Oceans drained, continents shifted.
It was discovered in the mountains
By a strange unknown creature.
Gifted to a child, filled with awe.
Brought home and thought of no more.
It could not have a single flaw.
The original creatures, used for décor.
