It stood there peacefully, surrounded by hedge

and flowerbeds. Strong broad branches shot out

of its tough, smooth trunk. Tiny green leaves

left little gaps, letting the sun peek through.

At the base of the tree, lumpy roots lay on top

of the cool, damp dirt. Tiny snails with unique shells

crawled slowly, leaving glistening trails.

But now Winter is here, the boughs

that once held hundreds of leaves are bare.

Spider webs are spun between sturdy branches.
