As I view the barren land
Where a house once sat
Mountains of ashes cover the vista
Memories unkindled and forgotten
Each charred flake a reminder of what was
My father’s home now an abyss
Each blackened cinder a reminder of lives past lived
A charcoal infused page flutters in the wind
Its screams muted by the calm breeze
The cinders blacker than the darkest sky
My father’s most prized collection
Destroyed without mercy
In his heart he had hoped it would last
But each comic was reduced to soot
Each charred flake a reminder of what was
The ashes once oh so valuable
Were now reduced to the dirt at our feet
Ashes to ashes dust to dust
The comics cherished
A collection perished
A childhood lost
Each charred flake a reminder of what was
