Listen. We can talk here,
this republic in your empire of intention.
Know when you step out of this door again
corridors will take you
as if they knew the way and could explain.
~ from ‘Occupation’, by Lisa Gorton, 2006
Initiating in 2004, with iterations in 2006 and 2009, Toilet Doors Poetry placed poetry behind the closed doors of those uniquely public and private spaces: the public toilet.
Toilet Doors Poetry was an innovative and exciting experiment, challenging perceptions about poetry, public and private spaces, and interactions between different forms of art. It was cheeky, and quirky, as well as bold and dynamic, and provided a wonderful opportunity for new and emerging writers to work professionally, forge connections and showcase their work.
